Capitalizing On Location-Based Services
"Location-based services (LBS) are applications that leverage a user's current physical location to provide enhanced services or experiences. LBS support gives developers an opportunity to create compelling services that are widely used and highly valued. In fact, the wide-open nature of the market leaves plenty of room for innovation.
Location information can be used for a variety of purposes, such as providing directions to the nearest restaurant, or monitoring the location of traffic jams. LBS are powered by three main methods for acquiring the user's location data: cell-based positioning, Global Positioning System (GPS), and Assisted GPS.
Nokia Developer Platforms support LBS applications via the Location API for J2ME™ (JSR-179). This API lets an application request and receive a user's coordinates -- regardless of the location method being used -- along with a time stamp and, if available, course and speed information. Nokia uses the security framework of Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0 to ensure that the application has rights to this information."
